German utilities get EUR billions in nuclear tax refunds

Billions in tax refunds are headed to German energy companies which have overpaid in taxes on nuclear power.

E.on, RWE, and other German energy supply firms have won a case in Germany's Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht) and are now poised to receive EUR 6.3 billion in refunds on a special fuel tax for nuclear energy paid over the years 2011 to 2016.

Germany's government went too far in relation to tax regulation when this tax was introduced, ruled the judge in the case, according to a statement on the website of the German Federal Constitutional Court.
