In 2012, Dong Energy altered its course when Henrik Poulsen was appointed CEO. The business turned away from being based on coal and gas and instead put focus on becoming an international leader in wind. One vital tool in the transformation was to fundamentally question the individual business areas in the group, Poulsen tells Danish newspaper Børsen.
"The financial challenge with our capital structure meant that we really had to accept the work of finding out what to develop further and what not to continue. Because we needed to make a turnaround plan for the board and for the main shareholder. What we did specifically was we took all business areas – at the time that counted 12 businesses, some small, some big – and went over them one at a time and asked ourselves some fundamental questions," Poulsen tells Børsen.
