Acquisition helps make up for customer defections at Centrica

British energy major Centrica delivers unexpected gains on the bottom line despite decreased revenue and almost a quarter-million fewer customers.

The UK's largest energy supplier Centrica made gains on the bottom line last year. The combination of a colder winter, increasing energy prices, and a cost-cutting program including 3,400 layoffs, helped secure the energy company positive development in the operating result from the previous year of 3.8 percent.

The operating result landed at GBP 1.5 billion (EUR 1.8 billion), according to the company's preliminary annual report, presented Thursday.
