Dong's farewell to coal is far from unique

Dong Energy is far from alone and not the first company to herald an exit from coal-fired power plants. Austria, France, and the UK are close to leaving coal behind, and several US states have already kicked coal out.

In 2023 at the latest, Dong's power plants will be finished firing coal. This announcement came as part of the Dong annual report for 2016, and it arrives after several years of intense work at Denmark's Dong Energy transitioning the company's Danish power plants from coal to biomass.

Dong has reduced its coal consumption by 73 percent since 2006. There are only two power plants that still need a solution from Dong; Asnæsværket and Esbjergværket.
