This Monday morning brought more good news for the price of offshore wind. The British offshore wind tender resulted in both Dong Energy as well as partners, EDPR and Engie landing contracts for their respective projects – Hornsea 2 of 1,386 MW and Moray of 950 MW – with a set purchasing price of GBP 57.5/MWh for 15 years in the CfD system. Far below half of the price of previous projects.

Hornsea 1, for instance, which Dong Energy is currently installing with 7 MW turbines from Siemens Gamesa, has a price more than 2.5 times that of Hornsea 2. When the Danish utility won the project in April 2014, the purchasing price was GBP 147.42/MWh. Meanwhile the Burbo Bank extension farm, which recently began operations and consists of 8 MW turbines from MHI Vestas, has a set price of GBP 150/MWh.
