Vestas wants to experiment with solar and batteries

The wind turbine manufacturer has "a significant pipeline" of projects which combine wind with solar and energy storage. Upwards of six projects will undergo testing from this year, and the plan is that they will be products for sale as early as 2019.

Vestas plans to expand beyond wind turbines, after rumors have long flourished. Thursday, the manufacturer specified some of its thoughts about incorporating both energy storage and solar power as part of the future business. This area in the company's vision will be called Sustainable Energy Solutions.

"Our vision has expanded to cover a larger area which not only includes wind turbines, but concerns a larger part of the energy mix," says Vestas' Head of R&D, Jorge Magalhaes, at a technology seminar this Thursday.
