Watch the video: Dong decommissions world's oldest offshore wind farm

It is the offshore wind industry's "first born" established in 1991. But now offshore wind farm Vindeby in Denmark is headed for retirement. Denmark's Dong Energy has shared a video depicting the decommissioning of the 55-meter tall wind turbines.

Dong Energy has previously referred to it as the "beginning of an industrial growth venture". But now the 25-year-old offshore wind farm Vindeby in Denmark, faces a well-deserved retirement.

11 turbines with slightly less than five megawatts have spun electricity for what corresponds to approximately 2,200 Danish households since 1991. But the offshore wind farm is now so old and worn that it will be decommissioned. Owner Dong Energy has begun the process after obtaining permission from the Danish Energy Agency in January.
