Last year, enough solar and wind was installed across the world that it would account for 17 W per every person on the planet. According to Recharge, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) reports that a record 70 GW of solar and near-record 56.5 GW of wind power were installed in 2016, increasing the world's green energy capacity by 126.5 GW.

Although the installation of cheap solar panels continues to overtake wind power, offshore wind saw the biggest jump, at least in terms of investments. Propelled forward by Europe and Dong Energy's decision to install Hornsea 1, USD 29.9 billion (EUR 28 billion) was invested in offshore wind, 40 percent more than in 2015.
