Kidnappings of seafarers reached highest level in a decade

A total 62 seafarers were kidnapped by pirates in 2016, which is the highest level in ten years. The problem is particularly prominent off West Africa and in the Sulu Sea between Malaysia and the Philippines, writes the International Maritime Bureau in its annual piracy report.

2016 saw the highest number of kidnapped seafarers over the past decade.

The increase came despite the fact that the number of pirate attacks was at the lowest level since 1998, writes the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) in its annual report.
