Statoil beats Dong and WPD in marathon US offshore wind auction

A record-breaking amount was spent by the oil company to acquire development rights for the first offshore wind-zone in the state of New York.

NEW YORK: After no less than 33 completed rounds of bidding in an auction Thursday and Friday, oil behemoth Statoil has secured the right to erect offshore wind turbines in an 325 square kilometer size area off the coast of New York.

According to Statoil, the zone has a potential of over 1 GW of wind energy once an initial 400-600 MW has been constructed.
