Goldwind reveals technology shift

High material costs prompt the Chinese wind OEM to unveil a crucial change of technology. Optimizing for lower speeds and adding cash-maximizing functions for customers are possible future focus areas, says CEO of the company's Danish subsidiary.

Since its beginnings with unit capacities of only 1.5MW, Goldwind's permanent magnet direct drive (PMDD) technology has formed the basis of all the OEM's wind turbines. However, rising mineral prices – especially those used in permanent magnets – now push the manufacturer to implement a seminal change away from PMDD.

Last week, Goldwind announced a new product portfolio based on medium-speed permanent magnet (MSPM) tech, entailing seven new turbine models with rotor diameters of 171 meters, five with 191 meters as well as single offshore offerings with a rotor diameter of 242 meters.
