GE upgrades onshore wind turbine to legendary size

With the Cypress platform's upgrade, the US-based OEM now officially offers a 6-MW machine. Another dimension, however, sticks out the most.

Of course it's merely a number.

In reality, too, it's only marginally different from the latest models of rivals: Enercon has a unit with a 161-meter rotor diameter, Vestas has one at 162 meters, and Nordex launched a 163-meter product last year. Indeed, Siemens Gamesa's top model has a 170-meter rotor. Nonetheless, there's something special about GE Renewable Energy's Cypress platform upgrade, revealed Monday.
