Siemens Gamesa-equipped wind farm black-starts grid

One of Scottishpower Renewables' wind farms has succeeded in managing a network task that has historically been the prerogative of central thermal power plants.

Tuesday evening, National Grid sent out a system warning. Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 p.m. local time and two hours forward, the UK's power grid was impacted by a capacity shortage totaling 740 MW, which in the absence of a market reaction could in the worst-case scenario result in a power outage.

However, the system operator underlines that the blackout threat was not "imminent", although one needn't look further back than Aug. 9, 2019, to find the latest big blackout that halted London Tube traffic and left millions of UK ratepayers without electricity.
