Siemens Gamesa shuts down blade factory

Long distance to the coast and low profitability have the turbine maker closing its second-to-last Spanish blade factory as the first tough initiative under new management.

No new parts were ordered for warehouses, temporary employees didn't have contracts extended, and the new management warned of tightenings. As early as last month, when Siemens Gamesa fired CEO Markus Tacke and delivered yet another gloomy financial statement, Spanish trade unions were concerned for local jobs at, not least, the blade factory in Aoiz. And with good reason, as it turned out.

The German-Spanish wind turbine manufacturer has decided to shut down the factory and slash the 239 permanent positions it entailed.
