A new prototype for an 8 MW offshore wind turbine is now unveiled in China.
Goldwind reveals that its prototype is undergoing a two-month trial at the company's test site in Fujian, after which Goldwind plans to install the machine at the Xinghua Bay Project Phase II project in late 2019, Goldwind informs in a LinkedIn post.
Indeed, Chinese wind turbine makers are taking long strides these days. In August, Dongfang disclosed that it has developed a new 10 MW direct drive offshore wind turbine, making it the country's largest, the developer tells.
Dongfang's unit will also be installed at Xinghua Bay.
The Chinese offshore wind market seems to have quite the bright outlook -- at least based on latest market update from Global Wind Energy Council, which projects 6 GW in annual growth over the next ten years. The prognosis for this year is already at 3.5 GW, which corresponds to around 43 percent of the installed global total.
Earlier this week, Norwegian oil major Equinor also announced that it has signed an MoU with China Power International Holding (CPIH) regarding an offshore wind partnership in both China as well as Europe.
"[China] is set to become the world’s biggest offshore wind market by 2030. As an offshore wind major, Equinor is excited to collaborate with CPIH to develop offshore wind," said Equinor Executive VP of New Energy Solutions Pål Eitrheim.
While China's onshore wind market is practically closed territory for non-Chinese operators, the offshore wind market could become a somewhat different story. Even so, major deals still require a Chinese partner, for instance, Siemens Gamesa sells its offshore wind models on license to the country's main manufacturer, Sewind
Sewind will thus also be bale to offer an 8 MW offshore wind turbine to its customers in the Chinese market.
The three wind OEMs have thereby surpassed Ming Yang, which purveys a typhoon-proof offshore model rated at 7.25 MW.
