EU project to trial energy storage and management systems on three islands

Three European islands will serve as the test sites for an EU project which will trial battery storage and smart energy management systems.

The EU Horizon 2020 project SMILE (Smart Island Energy Systems) will test nine Smart Grid technologies across three European islands.

The Danish island Samsø, the Scottish Orkney Islands and Portuguese island Madeira will partake in the project. The Danish participants – made up of Aalborg University, Danish energy storage systems manufacturer Lithium Balance, several local players on Samsø and Technological Institute – will install battery plants, solar panels and smart energy management systems on Samsø.
