New negotiator wants to open EU energy markets with "more EU"

INTERVIEW: In the midst of a historic crisis in the EU, the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators strives for more authority in order to achieve a smoother EU energy market. The negotiator at ACER, Morten Helveg Petersen, admits that additional EU regulation will be a hard sell.

Eight major proposals have been put forward for new legislation in the EU's Winter Package, which covers EU energy law ahead to 2019. The Danish MEP Morten Helveg Petersen has two busy years ahead, after he was recently appointed head negotiator for one of the proposals.

That proposal fundamentally aims to strengthen the pan-European Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) and endow it with greater authority, resulting in a strengthened single market for energy in the European Union.
