Covid crisis prompts lowest power consumption in over 50 years

Global electricity demand for 2020 is expected to drop by 2 percent, according to the IEA, which would mark the steepest annual decline since the middle of the 20th century.

2020 has seen lowered electricity consumption resulting from the coronavirus crisis and related activity decline in the global economy, concludes the International Energy Agency (IEA) in the organization's first Electricity Market Report.

The year's decline is estimated at 2 percent, which is the biggest annual drop in power consumption since the middle of last century. To compare with another recent major crisis, the corresponding decline after the financial crisis came to 0.6 percent in 2009.
