New Zealand to declare state of emergency for climate

Wellington plans to declare a state of emergency next week to center focus on climate change.


New Zealand's government intends to declare a state of emergency next week in a move meant to pressure the world's policymakers to take action on climate change mitigation, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern tells state media TVNZ on Wednesday.

"We’ve always considered climate change to be a huge threat to our region, and it is something we must take immediate action on," Ardern says.
