EU agrees to new CO2 emission standards for cars and vans

The EU Parliament had higher ambitions, but an agreement among member states still received broad support.

CO2 emissions from new cars must be reduced by 37.5 percent relative to the level set for 2021. The reduction rate for new vans is 31 percent.

A majority of MEPs voted in favor the the new emissions standard Wednesday, thereby ratifying the compromise negotiated by EU member states in late December.
