Trump to halt the retiring of coal plants

A rare alliance between the oil and gas industry and green organizations is protesting after Trump has tasked the US Department of Energy with halting the the retirement of old, unprofitable coal and nuclear plants.

Donald Trump has ordered US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry to halt the retiring of coal and nuclear plants. Trump says that a capacity decline of the two largest baseload energy sources, which comprise the majority of US energy production, would constitute a threat to national security.

"Impending retirements of fuel-secure power facilities are leading to a rapid depletion of a critical part of our nation’s energy mix and impacting the resilience of our power grid," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders wrote in an emailed statement to several US media on Friday, including Bloomberg.
