SPD campaigns to secure approval for joining German government

Secretary General of German social democratic party SPD, Lars Klingbeil, says that he is convinced that there will ultimately be majority support in SPD for joining the government.

Party leaders of Germany's social democratic party SPD began a campaign tour Saturday with the aim of gathering support from the party's grass roots to vote yes for SPD to enter a major coalition with federal chancellor Angela Merkel and her conservative party CDU.

The first of seven stops was Hamburg in northern Germany. A speech was held by acting president Olaf Shcholz and Andrea Nahles, who is nominated by the SPD management to lead the party after Martin Schulz.
