US authorities are investigating whether a ship anchor may have caused a major oil spill last Friday off the coast of Los Angeles.
According to news agency Reuters, the US coast guard has inspected an unnamed ship anchored close to the pipeline off the coast. The oil spill leaked through a 33cm rupture in the pipeline, which was "pulled out like a bowstring" over a stretch of 1,200 meters and moved up to 30 meters on the seabed, said a spokesman for Amplify Energy, owner of the oil pipeline and rigs connected by the pipeline.
