Brent field nearly pumped dry: Reference name maintained

The Brent oil and gas field, the European reference oil's namesake, is almost depleted.

Oil and gas field Brent, from which the European reference oil took its name, is about to run dry. Royal Dutch Shell is expected to withdraw from the site at some point next year, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The closure marks the end of the field, discovered in the 1970s and which came to lend its name to the European benchmark crude that has made billions of US dollars for Shell, ExxonMobil and the British state.
