Giant oil discovery in Bahrain could remain buried

Middle Eastern state Bahrain has made one of the biggest oil discoveries in years. But the field containing 81.5 billion barrels of oil cannot be utilized with today's technology and the question is whether or not the oil will ever be extracted.

With a GDP per capita of around USD 22,000, the people of Bahrain in the Middle East might think the grass looks greener in neighboring states Qatar and the United Arab Emirate (UAE), which boast GDPs per capita of USD 59,000 and USD 38,000, respectively.

But if the people of Bahrain got excited on April 1 and started dreaming of a future where they might reach the level of their wealthy neighbors, it was not just the result of an April Fools Day joke – April 1 was the day that Bahrain's authorities announced that they had made a brand new and unusually large oil discovery in the country.
