A major gas discovery could boost German Wintershall's growth ambitions on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate reports that the firm has made a large discovery in the Norwegian Sea.

The discovery was made at a depth of 3,819 meters, around 115 kilometers southwest of the major Statoil field Aasta Hansteen. Wintershall estimates that gas volumes were found in the drilling in the range of 44 to 119 million barrels of oil equivalents. The reason why the estimate still covers such a wide range is that only one drilling has been completed and now more analysis work must be carried out.
