Wärtsilä and MAN Energy Solutions race to build ammonia engine

Major European engine makers Wärtsilä and MAN Energy Solutions both aim to start testing ammonia engines in 2021, but Wärtsilä wants to be ready to sell one year before its competitor. "We want to a forerunner," the company tells EnergyWatch's sister media, ShippingWatch.

Finnish Wärtsilä and German-Danish MAN Energy Solutions are both striving to have an ammonia engine ready for sale within the next couple of years.

Both will start testing engines in 2021. But where Wärtsilä expects to have its engine ready to be installed on a ship by 2023, MAN Energy Solutions will not put its model on the market until a year later, in 2024, say the two companies in comments to EnergyWatch's sister media,ShippingWatch.
