Batteries make debut in drilling rig market

West Mira will become the world's first offshore drilling rig to utilize onboard batteries, reducing CO2 emissions and cutting fuel consumption, says Siemens, the purveyor of the technology.

Batteries are finding way aboard the offshore sector, and drilling rig West Mira is set to become the the first of its kind in the world to utilize onboard batteries, writes Siemens in a press statement.

"The integration of energy storage with the power supply and distribution system of a drilling rig represents an important step towards improving the environmental sustainability of the offshore oil and gas industry," writes Siemens Head of Offshore Solutions Bjørn Einar Brath, who leads the work on the battery with a maximum capacity of 6 MW.
