Electric cars cannot save the world from climate change

Enthusiasts who hope to mitigate climate change with electric cars may be disappointed by the new Global Electric Vehicles Outlook report from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The number of electric and rechargeable hybrid cars in the world increased by 54 percent in 2017 relative to 2016. In terms of percentage, that is a quite impressive growth, however a closer look at the figures tells a different story.

Globally, There were around 3 million electric and rechargeable hybrid cars in the world at the end of 2017, however, that quantity should be compared to the fact that nearly 86 million new internal combustion cars were sold in the same period.
